Gimson & Slater 'Rock 'n' Rest' Lounge Chair – Teak & Green Velvet, c.1960s
Gimson & Slater 'Rock 'n' Rest' Lounge Chair – Teak & Green Velvet, c.1960s
Gimson & Slater — 'Rock 'n' Rest' Lounge Chair, Britain, c.1960s.
Few British Mid-Century designs captured the era's optimism quite like the Rock 'n' Rest — a chair that took the simple pleasure of reclining and made it look effortless. Produced by Gimson & Slater of Leicester, it remains one of the most recognisable lounge chairs of the British postwar period.
This example presents beautifully. The solid teak arms retain their warm, honey grain, and the adjustable reclining back allows the sitter to find their own angle — a quietly ingenious feature that still works as intended. The upholstery, replaced at some point in a soft sage green velvet, is in good condition and gives the chair a considered, contemporary edge without compromising its period character.
A genuine piece of British design history, ready to use and live with.
