Elliotts of Newbury stands as a remarkable chapter in British craftsmanship, with roots stretching back to the Victorian era. From humble beginnings as a local joinery, the company evolved into a celebrated manufacturer whose work touched iconic buildings, wartime innovation, and mid-century modern design. The story of Elliotts is one of resilience, ingenuity, and enduring influence—shaping not only furniture, but also the architectural and industrial heritage of Berkshire and beyond.
Elliotts began in the late 1850s, led by Samuel Elliott in Newbury, Berkshire.
Originally a joinery and moulding business, the company quickly gained a reputation for craftsmanship, supplying woodwork for churches, banks, and grand homes. Their work attracted renowned architects and contributed to major Victorian buildings, including Manchester Town Hall. Despite a devastating fire in 1885, which nearly destroyed the business, Elliotts rebuilt and continued to shape the local economy and landscape through both employment and speculative housing.
Samuel Elliott was not only a skilled joiner but also an inventor, notably developing the “Elliott’s Smoke Annihilator.”
However, financial losses from this invention, combined with the fire’s aftermath, led to bankruptcy in 1895. A new company was formed, with Samuel as works manager, but he eventually left to start a new venture in Reading. Under new management, the Newbury factory shifted focus, ultimately ceasing joinery in 1919 to concentrate on furniture manufacturing and contributing significantly during both World Wars.
During the World Wars, Elliotts adapted by producing ammunition cases and aircraft components, employing a largely female workforce.
Their expertise extended to iconic aircraft like the Spitfire and Horsa Glider, playing a vital role in the war effort. After WWII, Elliotts manufactured components for prefabricated homes and, later, sports gliders. In 1948, furniture production resumed, and their craftsmanship was recognized at the 1951 Festival of Britain, cementing their status as leaders in British furniture design.
By the 1970s, Elliotts faced financial difficulties, leading to mergers and eventual closure of the Newbury site in 1975.
The Reading branch, established by Samuel Elliott and run by his descendants, was known for prestigious carpentry and innovative designs like revolving doors. It too changed hands multiple times, finally closing in the early 2000s. Today, Elliotts’ legacy lives on through the enduring quality and design of their mid-century furniture, highly prized by collectors and design enthusiasts.
